(article) Introduction to Alchemy in Jungian Psychology - Iona Miller

Jung spent the better part of the end of his life studying the subject of alchemy, which has been called the search for the godhead in matter.  In typical "Jungian" style, his interest in alchemy developed from a vivid dream about an ancient library full of arcane books.  Later, after much searching, Jung came to posses such a library. Alchemy reflected in symbolic form the same sorts of imagery Jung saw in his practice in neurosis, psychosis, dreams and imagination.  Jung insisted that the psyche cannot be understood in conceptual terms, but only through living images or symbols, which are able to contain paradox and ambiguity. Alchemy reflects the process of personal transformation in the metaphor of transmuting base metals into gold.

(article) The Red Book; Holy Grail of the Unconscious has been discovered.

A book by Carl Jung called Liber Novus, a.k.a The Red Book, is being released to the public for the first time. It was discovered secretly locked away in a bank vault in Switzerland. The book is a first hand account from Jung about his own drastic, bizarre, and nearly out of control, decent into his unconscious mind which brought on hallucinations and anxiety that he may be going insane. He worked through this for 16 years and would later attributed every positive accomplishment and inspiration of his subsequent career to that mind bending personal journey. Jung's family has kept this book secret for decades until they were finally convinced to make it available to the public.

While it is true that Jung “came to see the psyche as an inherently more spiritual and fluid place, an ocean that could be fished for enlightenment” he also recognized that great care must be taken by the individual when delving into his or her unconscious and possibly even much more care should be taken when going beyond that into the collective unconscious.

Joseph Campbell, author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, a scholar who achieved legendary status as an explicator of myths, is reverently profiled in this documentary that encompasses his long life and career. During his childhood in New York City, Campbell was taken to see "Buffalo Bill" Cody's Wild West Show at Madison Square Garden. Young Campbell was fascinated by the Native Americans in Cody's performing troupe and eventually became obsessed with mythology. As he came to realize that myths worldwide had the same underpinnings, he also discovered his life's work. This documentary mentions Campbell's affinity for the writings of James Joyce and Carl Jung, and there is ample footage of Campbell, casual in flannel shirts, giving lectures salted with references to Buddhism, Christianity, classical mythology, St. Augustine, and the rituals of plains Indians. In later life, Campbell is seen being honored at a banquet at which George Lucas rises to give him credit for helping to inspire the writing of Star Wars. After Campbell's death in 1987, heated controversies arose about his work, but this documentary is an overwhelmingly positive look at his writings, lectures, and personality. --Robert J. McNamara

(article) C. G. Jung and the Alchemical Renewal

When Jung published his first major work on alchemy at the end of World War II, most reference books described this discipline as nothing more than a fraudulent and inefficient forerunner of modern chemistry. Today, more than twenty-five years after Jung's death, alchemy is once again a respected subject of both academic and popular interest, and alchemical terminology is used with great frequency in textbooks of depth-psychology and other disciplines. It may be said without exaggeration that the contemporary status of alchemy owes its very existence to the psychological wizard of Küsnacht. Take away the monumental contribution of C.G. Jung, and most modern research concerning this fascinating subject falls like a house of cards; to speak of alchemy in our age and not mention him could be likened to discoursing on Occultism without noting the importance of Helena P. Blavatsky, or discussing religious studies in contemporary American universities without paying homage to Mircea Eliade.
